In the whirlwind of busy days, taking care of your diet can feel like just one more task on the endless to-do list. Between work, family, and other obligations, it can be hard to find the time and energy to implement consistent habits.
That’s why, personally, I like smoothies so much: they are a simple and practical way to nourish the body quickly and in a way that adapts to individual needs. In my recipe books, you’ll find many versions, because there truly is a smoothie for every moment: from those that balance mood to those that strengthen digestion, the immune system, or cognitive function.
When faced with fatigue or a lack of energy, many people turn to coffee as an instant lifesaver. However, this is not always the best option. While coffee provides quick energy, improving alertness, short-term memory, and concentration—thanks to its caffeine and antioxidant content—on its own, it can cause energy highs and lows, irritability, or anxiety, especially if consumed in excess or without foods that help regulate its absorption.
A more balanced way to enjoy its benefits is to integrate it into a smoothie like the one I’ll share below. By combining coffee with ingredients like cacao, coconut, and matcha, its effect is modulated and enhanced:
- Cacao contains theobromine, which improves cerebral blood flow and elevates mood in a more sustained way.
- Coconut, rich in healthy fats, stabilizes energy levels, supports satiety, and nourishes the nervous system.
- Matcha, with its L-theanine content, counteracts the stimulating effects of caffeine, promoting a calm and focused state of attention.
This synergy of ingredients not only provides a natural and delicious boost but also supports brain health, reduces inflammation, and improves resilience to physical and mental stress. It is a smart and therapeutic formula, ideal for those seeking performance without sacrificing balance, and a rich, simple way to deeply nourish both body and mind.
Step by step: Mocha Matcha Smoothie with Coffee, Cacao, and Coconut
This is my favorite morning or afternoon guilt-free “pick-me-up”. It is anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants, and provides brain food in the form of the trinity of cognitive function: coffee, cocoa, and coconut. If you prefer, you can substitute organic decaffeinated coffee or just use cocoa when serving to children, replacing the liquid from the coffee with extra coconut milk. Make sure your ingredients are organic and sugar-free.
Ingredients
- 12 oz. fresh-brewed organic coffee, hot
- 1/2 c. full-fat, unsweetened coconut milk
- 1/2 tsp. Organic Matcha powder (or strong tea from 3 matcha tea bags)
- 2 tbsp. unsweetened organic cocoa powder (for drinking)
- 2–5 drops liquid stevia (or to taste)
- Vanilla extract (optional)
- Coconut cream, unsweetened (optional)
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a blender at medium speed for a few minutes until frothy. Pour into a mug and top with coconut cream, if desired.
This recipe makes four servings.
